Despite that, Morocco made a history in the tournament by becoming the first African and Arab team to reach the last four of the FIFA World Cup 2022.
Luka Modrić led Croatia to third place in what was likely the midfield great’s last appearance at the World Cup.
The runners-up from four years ago secured another medal by beating Morocco 2-1 in the third-place match on Saturday.
Mislav Oršić scored the decisive goal shortly before halftime at Khalifa International Stadium to ensure Modrić finished on a winning note, if this does turn out to be his last World Cup match.
At the age of 37, that seems likely, even if there are hopes he will lead his country at the 2024 European Championship.
Joško Gvardiol put Croatia ahead in the seventh minute, but Achraf Dari evened the score in the ninth.
It is the second time Croatia has taken third place. The team also achieved that feat in its first World Cup as an independent nation 1998.
After becoming the first African team to reach the World Cup semifinals, Morocco’s tournament ended in two losses. But the team’s achievements in Qatar will be remembered for the outpouring of pride among Arab nations.
The World Cup final between defending champion France and Argentina is scheduled for Sunday at Lusail Stadium.
The third-place match is considered by some to be a meaningless exhibition. Even Morocco coach Walid Regragui described it as a “booby prize” in the buildup. But neither team lacked motivation in a fiercely contested game between two nations that few expected to go so far.
That was underlined by a host of players needing to be substituted because of injury in the second half as Morocco pushed for an equalizer.
The teams had already played out 0-0 draw in the group stage and had made to the semifinals on the back of tough defenses, with a combined six shutouts. Goals weren’t a problem this time.
Perhaps that was because of the relative freedom of playing in a game with supposedly little at stake. Another factor for Morocco, at least, was the absence of three key defenders, Romain Saïss, Nayef Aguerd and Noussair Mazraoui.
The impact of those absences was felt when Croatia took the lead off Gvardiol’s diving header. In a slick move, Ivan Perišić flicked a free kick into the middle of the penalty box and the center back did the rest.
Morocco responded two minutes later when Lovro Majer inadvertently helped on Hakim Ziyech’s free kick and Dari headed in to even the score.
Croatia, however, was back in front three minutes before halftime.
Oršić picked up the ball on the left of the box and curled a shot toward the top corner. Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou got a touch on the ball, but could only push it onto the post on its way into the net.
Lionel Messi and Julian Alvarez fired Argentina to a place in the World Cup final with a dominant 3-0 semifinal win over Croatia at Lusail Stadium.
Croatia, aiming to reach back-to-back finals after their 2018 heroics, were the better side during a cagey opening half-hour but goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic brought down Alvarez as the Manchester City striker lifted the ball over him.
Livakovic was his country’s hero in the shootout wins over Japan and Brazil but he was left with no chance as Messi thumped his penalty into the top-right corner to join Kylian Mbappe at the top of the Golden Boot leading scorer race.
Alvarez then tenaciously bundled his way through a scattered Croatia backline on the counter-attack to double the lead, and the two goalscorers combined delightfully in the 69th minute — Messi tormenting Josko Gvardiol with a winding dribble before teeing up Alvarez for his fourth of the tournament.

Messi himself has five and is now Argentina’s all-time leading World Cup goalscorer, having overhauled Gabriel Batistuta. Next he will get one last chance to match fellow great Diego Maradona and lift the famous gold trophy.
There was another all-time great plotting another route towards glory on the field on Tuesday and Luka Modric orchestrated a composed opening from Croatia, although their lack of cutting edge when compared to Argentina’s lethal front two was ultimately exposed.
Dejan Lovren absent-mindedly played Alvarez onside and Livakovic took him out as he prodded towards goal. Penalties have not always been Messi’s strongest suit, but he found a precision strike to meet the moment and net his 11th overall World Cup goal.
If the first goal was the result of hours of repetition at plush training grounds, the second was born on the pitches Calchin, Cordoba. Alvarez seized possession on the halfway line after Marcelo Brozovic’s cross from a short corner was blocked. Nahuel Molina’s storming run down the outside confused Croatia and Alvarez battled on to go it alone, bursting through challenges from Josip Juranovic and Borna Sosa to finish.
Messi almost scored his second, exchanging passes with Enzo Fernandez to draw a fine stop from Livakovic at his near post, but he had one more piece of magic to give Alvarez a second goal that was far more straightforward than his first.
Gvardiol’s performances in this tournament have led to transfer speculation putting a £100million ($123m) price tag on his head. But he found himself bamboozled as Messi beat him, checked back and spun around him again to leave a chance on a plate for Alvarez. The final awaits for the great man.
Lineups: Argentina Lineup (4-4-2, right to left): 23. E. Martinez (GK) — 26. Molina, 13. Romero, 19. Otamendi, 3. Tagliafico — 7. De Paul, 24. E. Fernandez, 5. Paredes, 20. Mac Allister — 9. Alvarez, 10. Messi
Theo Hernandez fired France into an early lead before substitute Randal Kolo Muani sealed a 2-0 victory against an excellent Morocco at Al Bayt Stadium, to send Les Blues into the World Cup final.
France remained on course to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to retain the world title and will now meet Lionel Messi and Argentina.
Morocco have been the surprise package of Qatar 2022 and Walid Regragui’s side responded superbly after Hernandez’s fifth-minute opener, pinning back the world champions for significant periods in a display of considerable courage and skill.
But Eintracht Frankfurt striker Kolo Muani proved to be France’s unlikely hero, scoring with his first touch after Kylian Mbappe had a shot blocked 11 minutes from time.
In the process of becoming the first African side in history to reach the World Cup semifinals, Morocco had only conceded once in the tournament heading into this match.
Romain Saiss, Nayef Aguard and Noussair Mazraoui were all passed fit to start but West Ham’s Aguard withdrew after the warmup and captain Saiss was substituted midway through the first half when clearly not fit.
That uncertainty seemed to contribute to a chaotic France opener, where Antoine Griezmann seized upon a slip from Jawad El Yamiq and cut the ball back to Mbappe. The Paris Saint-Germain star had his first effort blocked and a second looped up off Oliver Giroud, with Hernandez alive to the possibilities as he found an acrobatic finish.
Giroud struck the upright as Saiss’ thigh gave out, but Hugo Lloris had already produced a save at full stretch from Azzedine Ounahi by that point and El Yamiq almost atoned for his error with an overhead kick that thumped the base of the post.
Mbappe tried to get France back on the front foot after the restart but it was another winger, Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech, who was the outstanding attacker of the half, orchestrating several intricate attacks down the right flank.
Ibrahima Konate, only playing after Dayot Upemacano was ruled out through illness, made last-ditch clearances and France only had breathing space when Mbappe’s quick feet made room for a half-blocked shot that fell kindly for Kolo Muani, who had only been on the field for 44 seconds.
The memories of Morocco’s incredible run will rest much longer in the memory. Lineups: France (4-2-3-1, right to left): 1. Lloris (GK) — 5. Kounde, 4. Varane, 24. Konate, 22. T. Hernandez — 8. Tchouameni, 13. Fofana — 11. Dembele, 7. Griezmann, 10. Mbappe — 9. Giroud
Antonela Roccuzzo and Lionel Messi on GhanaSky.com
Antonela Roccuzzo is the brains behind Lionel Messi’s billion-dollar brand who will cheer on Argentina’s talisman from the stands as he bids for eternal FIFA World Cup glory.
Meet Antonela Roccuzzo who won Lionel Messi‘s heart when they were both just five.
It was love at first sight for Antonela Roccuzzo and Lionel Messi
She is now mother to three of his children and the brains behind his legacy
She is a philanthropist, influencer and children’s fashion label owner
Roccuzzo did sacrifice her career as a dentist to be by Messi’s side.
Little did Antonela Roccuzzo know that when she met a young boy who dreamed of being of being a footballer when she was just five, that she would be cheering on the best player on the planet in today’s World Cup final.
Neither did she have any idea that she would go on to become the brains behind Lionel Messi’s billion-dollar brand which eclipses all others, including David and Victoria Beckham and even long-term rival Cristiano Ronaldo and his fiancee Georgina Rodriguez.
Nor that, on the way, she would become possibly the most famous woman in South America. Today she’s a philanthropist, a multi-millionaire influencer, a children’s fashion label owner and an animal lover.
She is also a dentist, though she gave that up to be at the Argentina striker’s side as he started his journey via Barcelona and now Paris Saint-Germain to become the world’s richest and finest footballer.
Lionel Messi and his wife Antonela Roccuzzo first met when they were just five and now have three children and have build a million-dollar brand together.
he woman who stole Messi’s heart is now possibly the most famous woman in South America. Today she’s a philanthropist, a multi-millionaire influencer, a children’s fashion label owner and an animal lover.
Almost 30 years after she first came face to face with Messi, Antonela – mother to the superstar’s three sons – will be hoping the 35-year-old can lead Argentina to victory over defending champions France in Qatar today.
It would seal the perfect ending to his glorious career, securing him the one honour left to him in the game. Those who know Antonela, 34, say that she is ‘humble, modest and enjoys nothing more than to be at home with her boys and her two beloved dogs’.
There are, of course, several homes. They include a £10million mansion just outside Barcelona with views of both the beautiful Catalan hills and the Mediterranean coast.
There are others in Ibiza, Miami, and their home town of Rosario in Argentina. There they have a house called The Fortress with 25 rooms, including a playroom for sons Thiago, Mateo and Ciro.
It is, according to friends, where the Messis plan to retire. And that would take the handsome couple full circle back to when they met in 1993, when their fairy-tale romance began.

Because their love story, particularly compared with those of most footballers who tend to meet their WAGs in gaudy nightclubs or on social media, is just that.
Antonela is the cousin of Messi’s 30 31 childhood friend Lucas Scagilia.
Back in the early Nineties, when the footballer-to-be first laid eyes on her, he asked: ‘Who is she?’ ‘Antonela, my cousin,’ replied Scagilia.
According to Scagilia’s father, Messi ‘could not look away from her for a second’. She visited the neighbourhood for two days, and Messi immediately knew he wanted to be with her for ever.
Whenever she stayed at Scagilia’s house, Messi would find an excuse to visit in the hope that he could catch a glimpse of her.
Often, this would be at weekends. He would write her love letters and told her that when they both grew up she would be his girlfriend.
They remained in contact, with Antonela going to watch Messi and her cousin play for the Newell’s Old Boys club in their younger days.
As his career blossomed, Messi moved to Barcelona when he was 13 but the pair remained in contact.
Five years later, tragedy bought them back together. Antonela was devastated when her best friend Ursula Notz died in a car accident. Messi was so concerned about his childhood crush that he flew back to Argentina to comfort her.
They realised then that they wanted to be boyfriend and girlfriend. Still, there were thousands of miles between them because ambitious Antonela, then 18, didn’t want to be an archetypal WAG.
She went off to get a degree in humanities and social sciences from the National University of Rosario, and then started postgraduate studies in dentistry. But love eventually won out.
Antonela made the heart-wrenching decision to cut short her career and move to Barcelona two years after their relationship became known.
On the football chat show Hat Trick Barca on the Catalan channel TV3 in January 2009, Messi was asked if he was in a relationship.
He replied: ‘Yes, I have a girlfriend. She is in Argentina. The truth is that I am well and I am relaxed.’
Just a few months later the couple went public during a carnival in Sitges after the big BarcelonaEspanyol local derby.
In 2012, Thiago was born, followed by Mateo in 2015. And in 2017 – 25 years after their first meeting – Antonela finally became Mrs Messi when they tied the knot at a luxury hotel in their home town of Rosario.
It was described as Argentina’s ‘wedding of the century’ and boasted a guest list of 260 people including footballers Neymar, Luis Suárez and Gerard Piqué, who arrived in Rosario in a private jet with his then partner, Colombian pop star Shakira.
The bride wore a dress by Rosa Clara, a Barcelonabased designer who has dressed actress Eva Longoria and Spain’s Queen Letizia.
A year later the couple had another son, Ciro. Their clan also includes two dogs, a French mastiff named Señor Hulk and a more timid cockapoo named Abu.
Messi says of his wife: ‘She has many good qualities: how she gets by on a daily basis; her personality, she is always in a good mood, and she always faces up to problems in an admirable way.
‘She is a very intelligent person who is great in all aspects of life.’
Despite her wealth, Antonela does not spend her days shopping for designer clothing.
She volunteered at the SJD hospital in Barcelona in the summer.
The couple also gave the leftovers from their wedding to the Rosario food bank. While her husband rakes in £94million over three years playing for Paris Saint-Germain, Antonela makes her own millions as a social media influencer.
Businesses are falling over themselves to sign her up to plug their products in return for a huge pay cheque.
They include Alo yoga clothing, Dolce & Gabbana, Guerlain, Dior and Louis Vuitton.
But this afternoon, when Messi lines up at the Lusail Stadium in Doha, their billion-dollar bank balance will pale into insignificance as he plays to fulfil another childhood dream – to lift the most sought-after trophy in world football
